ROAR Inc runs school programs! We work with groups of 20 students over an 8-week period, one session per week. Each session consists of a running or strength training component (earning a wrist band) and a high-performance mindset workshop, with sessions typically lasting an hour.
The goal for the for the participants in the programs is to earn 'Super Human' status by week eight. Super Human status is acquired by earning four physical wrist bands and performing 50 Acts of Kindness. The physical goals have been chosen carefully as they can be achieved by most young people in an eight-week period and do not require any special athletic talent. Participants are given diaries to track their progress towards their goals, and they are only permitted to record two acts of kindness per day, encouraging daily habits of journal-writing and self-reflection.

There is a mindset/head coach and an assistant coach at every session, and occasionally we will bring in guest coaches. We also have an amazing inclusivity coach if required (specialised in working with neuro-diversity). All of our coaches hail from sporting backgrounds and are passionate about working with young people.

The chosen 20 students are either selected by the school, or through the use of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, a self-esteem measure widely used in social science research. It uses a scale of 0–30, where a score less than 15 may indicate problematic low self-esteem. We have run many pre- and post-program evaluations using this tool, and are proud to report 100% increases in whole group self-esteem results from every program we have evaluated.

Improving self-esteem, resilience, and capability is at the core of what we do at ROAR Inc. Our aim is to show young people what they are capable of, to understand that no feeling is final, and to teach them how to keep going when things get hard.

Correlations between exercise and improved mental health have been researched and proven, as have the links between high self-esteem, a sense of community, and mental wellbeing. This unique program targets all of these areas and underpins its outstanding success.

ROAR GOES TO SCHOOL
Many thanks to Jack Kendrick from Mundaring Christian College Media School for this school program snapshot and to the wonderful staff and students of Swan View SHS and Eastern Hills SHS for allowing us to film.
These two programs were fully funded by the Shire of Mundaring under the Youth Engagement Partnership Fund

Our trial in 2023 tracked students who were considered at risk socially and emotionally through ROAR’s 8-week programme and the data (Child Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale) showed that all participants had moved in their self-esteem, confidence and general outlook on their schoolwork. Anecdotally, classroom teachers noted a change in their participating students and feedback from parents indicated the same.
We then worked with our P&C to ensure that we could continue to run it with another group so that the impact would spread further through our school.
Due to these overwhelmingly positive outcomes, the staff at Parkerville collectively decided to use the 2024 Student Wellbeing Boost (federal funding) that was provided to every school to address the wellbeing and mental health of students, on extending the ROAR programme and targeting younger students over a semester.
The focus on physical wellbeing and its impact on mental wellbeing is one of the significant learnings from ROAR that has been obvious to our school. The pride that we have witnessed when students reach a milestone and receive a band is significant. We have seen students that we considered at high risk due to, not only their mental health, but their low physical capabilities, transform their mindset and achieve milestones that were previously not thought possible.

The dedication to raising the self-esteem of the children in the Hills is what drives the ROAR programme and Kate, and the mission that they are on is such an important one. I ...am grateful for this programme and the change it has made at our school.
