Beaver

19 July 2008

Hello Everyone, my name is Beaver and I was only 3 months old when I was adopted by my Mum & Dad from the Kempsey RSPCA.

I have been living at my new home in Newcastle since 25th May 2008, I have lots of toys and I am the star of the house, I love cuddles and snuggling with mum and dad.

I have a brother “Kosmo” who was adopted from the RSPCA when he was 14 weeks old, he is now 2yrs old and is a Border Collie X whom I love very much and have lots of fun playing and teasing him.

I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to my Aunty Carol from the RSPCA Kempsey for looking after me till Mum and Dad adopted me. I hope I make the success stories page like my brother did back when he was 6mths old.

Talk to you soon,

Love Beaver the Kitty (aka Lisa & Brett Ashman)

Isabelle

29 June 2008

We adopted Issabelle a Toy Poodle X nearly one month ago although it does feel like so much longer.

I was looking for a smallish dog for our little family i have two boys so I started looking at all the pet rescue websites. The day I started I saw a pic of this ball of fluff, her name was Isabelle and she had been picked up somewhere and not picked up by anyone. It said she was roughly 8 months old. I instintley fell in love with the pic of this dog sending it to my husband and best friend. My Husband was hestitant at first but i had a good feeling about this one, good breed small ad NOT a puppy which is good.

I rang about the next day and was told she was in for desexing I told my husband Ben I know we were suposed to have this dog so I planned on going to see her when I could which was a Thursday. So I took my brother with me so go see this Issabelle we had all been talking about. There she was in front of me and I had no idea as she was wet and dirty and much smaller than she looked in the pic, so I went into her cage and started talking to her picked her up and I instantly feel in love she was quiet but stll playful. She was so affecionate after about 5 minutes I decided I had to take her that day. I luckily got to and she sat on my lap the whole way home snuggled right in. Issabelle was so skinny and matted up so a few days latter she went to the groomer to get all her yukky hair cut of.

Fast Forward a few weeks and Issabelle is definitely a part of out family. My 2 boys love her so much and she sleeps with our 4 yr old every night and during his day sleep. It's so cute! She is so smart, she plays, fetches and sits and she loves to play but also cuddle if you sit still for a minute she'll be on top of you like a cat. My Husband loves her so much. She has put on a heap of weight and her hair is growing back and she loves being groomed and I love gromming her.

Issabelle or Issy as the boys call her has many outfits as she gets cold with not much hair or weight. So basically it has worked out better then we expected. We All love her so much and she's very spolit as all little girls should be and we all know how BLESSED we are to have found her. She's wonderful!!

Thanks so much for taking care of her before we found her.

Odi

04 June 2008

Just saw the success stories online and thought I would add my own. Last year, while in Wollongong, I visited the Illawarra RSPCA, where I met a little white and tan man called 'Banjo'.

Banjo was such a little sweetie, but we already had a dog at home. Over the next few days I couldn't get Banjo out of my head, and so, after calls backwards and forwards to my husband at home in Adelaide, pet transport services, etc etc, I headed back to the RSPCA to adopt him.

That was almost a year ago and I can honestly say it was a great decision and worth the logistical nightmare to get him home. We have changed Banjo's name to Odi and he is an absolute pleasure. His favourite things are playing ball, going to the dog park, and playing tug of war with his puppy brother Ari (our German Short Haired Pointer). We also took him to the million paws walk this year and he thoroughly enjoyed it!

Odi is very clever and we can teach him tricks very quickly - he learnt to go through a jump and also to go through a tunnel on command in about a half an hour. I would definitely recommend adopting a pet - the love and companionship from my little man is just the best.

Rusty

31 May 2008

A big hello to everyone at the RSPCA in Somersby.

I'm sure everyone is glad to hear that Rusty arrived well in Germany and is enjoying his time here very much. He's an awesome dog and enjoyes every minute of life.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the shelter for making it possible that Rusty could go home with us and for taking such great care for him while he was at the shelter. Keep the good work up!

It is really unbelievable that someone gave away a dog like Rusty or Maggie or Rocko or Adam or Max or Tilly or any of the other dogs that we learned to love while taking them for walks. They really do deserve a second chance and we dearly hope that they all found great new homes.

We attached some pictures so everyone can get an impression of Rusty's new life. They were mainly taken during our walks at the Isar and our visit to the zoo. Enjoy! By the way - we decided to go to dog school with Rusty and he went from beginner's class to the top dog in the advanced class in just one day!!!

Greetings from Munich, Vanessa, Verena and Rusty!

Charlie Brown

28 May 2008

Its been over a year and Charlie Brown has certainly settled in with his new family. After the deaths of our beloved dogs Sandy and Fluffy we found the house too quiet without a voicestrous young terrier struting around the place. My parents finally caved and we went to the RSPCA Yagoona Shelter to 'look' (but we knew what that meant).

We wondered down the rows of small dogs and my youngest brother and I came across a cage marked 'Charlie Brown'. After explaining to John who Charlie Brown from Peanuts was we see this little terrier come trotting up to the gate and give us that 'Please Take Me Home With You' look. It was settled there and then, he was meant to be ours. John called the parents over and they agreed he's perfect.

Almost 18 months on from that day and Charlie Brown gladly calls this his home. He has a family of 5 who all care for and love him deeply, and even the kids next door, who are over here quite frequently. Since then Charlie has scored himself a sister, our new beloved cat Jessie. She was found under a bin at the local supermarket parkinglot and has lived here ever since. He also has gained a new friend in the cat next door, Jackie and so has Jess. Charlie Brown is without a doubt part of our family, as much as Jessie.

Jock

12 May 2008

To everyone at the RSPCA Yagoona!

Well by glancing at him you may no recognise him but look into the blue eyes and you'll probably all remember who he is! We adopted Jock the Shetland Sheepdog X with the gorgeous blue eyes from the Yagoona Shelter Janurary 25th 2006 to be an agility dog and to give our other dog a friend! He has been a dream since we got him! Everyone wants him; and when people ask me if they can have him I tell them get in line!

Jock is now eight years old but he doesn't act like it; he acts more like a 2 year old! He jumps up to say hello and gives you big kisses everyday! He is such a loving dog, he accompanies me and our other dog Snoopy everywhere and everyday he goes and visits his friends at the dog park!

As far as agility goes jock has blown everyone away; no one can believe that he has only been training for 2 years; people watch us and think we have been together our entire lives! He is a little Star with a few ribbons under his belt, an 11th,9th,6th and 4th place in various comps and alot of great runs that weren't good enough for a prize but he still gave me 110%! Our family just adores Jock and can't imagine our lives without him! After a rocky start Snoopy and Jock are best friends who love nothing more than to lounge around on the dog bed asleep together!

We extremly thankful to all the staff at Yagoona who put in their time an effort with assisting us in adopting this wonderful little dog who has stolen spots in pretty much everyone he meets hearts!

Tigger

06 May 2008

Hi to all the people working at the Dubbo RSPCA,

I don't know if you remember me, but I was at your shelter for some time. I am a Greyhound and my name is Tig (Tigger).

Well I took a trip to the big smoke about eight months ago and landed right in the middle of it under the flight path - handy if I want to travel by plane but my driver drives me wherever I need to go. It's very noisy and busy in the city and there are so many people, many of whom smile and tell me how beautiful I am.

So what have I been up to since I arrived in Sydney? Well lots of things. First, I joined the Greyhound Adoption Group where I got involved in walks and various activities. The most memorable was the Christmas party which was held in a large park, you have never seen so many happy Greyhounds! We were all very well behaved and acknowledged each other in our quiet, dignified way. Then we were called on to do very undignified things such as the underpants race and the fancy dress competition, where I was dressed as a pirate as my person tells me I have eyes like Johnny Depp. I must say I didn't look half bad, very fetching.

Over time I have become aquainted with a small group of Greyhounds who, like me live in the inner west and occasionally we go for a walk and a coffee at the Bones Cafe. The place is usually teaming with dogs of all shapes and sizes and it feels like every household in Sydney has a dog of some sort and a lot of them are small, white, fluffy ones who yap a lot. Thank goodness I am more the quiet, dignified type.

Recently we had a couple of foster Greyhounds form GAPS stay with us until they were adopted. I think my person liked the idea of thundering paws around the house because when asked by friends about the need to have another dog in the house, she mutters softly that Greyhounds are like chocolates, you can't stop at one. So we have now adopted a little female from the RSPCA to live with us. She is feeling a bit poorly at the moment as she has just ahd her operation, but she is already eyeing off my toys and I think she will play chasings with me even though I can be a bit daunting when I am running flat out.

Well that's it for now. I get to sleep in late, go out and about, do my bit in showing the public how beautiful Greyhounds are and I have a person who thinks I am the best thing since sliced bread.

I want to thank you so much for holding onto me at the shelter until I got my home. Life is beautiful.

Cheers,

Tig (and Anne)

Bindi

14 February 2008

To everyone at the RSPCA,

We would just like to thank you for helping us match up with Bindii (7 yr old Ridgeback from Yagoona).

When we met her at the RSPCA she was quiet and anxious. It was obvious the RSPCA had taken good care of her and the workers they were interested in her wellbeing.

We picked her up on New Years Eve and she wasn’t sure she wanted to come with us after her desexing. She settled in quite quickly and loves her new family, as we do her. She is coming out of her shell and enjoying all the love and attention she gets.

Bindii has the run of most of the house and enjoys being able to choose whether she sleeps inside or outside and after a short period of time has been able to claim her backyard as her own. She has won the heart of our friends and family because of her wonderful temperament and everyone is surprised that she is as old as she is because she looks fantastic.

She enjoys her walks on the beach, but is a bit scared of the water, however she loves her walks along the lake. She has just begun obedience training and is a shining student.

Thank you again for helping match us up with her as she is a perfect fit in our family!

Best wishes and thanks,

Linda and Peter

Indi

31 January 2008

Hello!

Just found your success stories for the pups and thought i may as well tell you all how indi (called Cloud when at the RSPCA) is doing.

After our last puppy passed away after being hit by a car, we werent really looking for a new dog, but on a trip to the RSPCA with my brother in law to see his new cat, we walked down the last row and there she was! Love at first sight!

Now she has settled in with her two sister cats and bearly ever chases them! :) She lets us sit on her couch to watch tv and she is very generous about letting us share HER house! LOL

She is in every way treated like a princess and is currently asleep on HER couch next to me as I type this. She is a pin up for the dogs of the RSPCA and we proudly tell people where she came from and would never consider buying a dog from a breeder or pet store when we could save some one as special as Indi instead!.

She has also taken up a modeling career and will be in a yellow pages ad! Tomorrow she will be getting our newest addition to our growing four legged family, a puppy German Shepard who was a stray found on the freeway!

Our thanks to the great staff at the RSPCA who took care of Indi!

Kane

21 January 2008

Hi

In July 2007 we came to your shelter and adopted a puppy. I’ve lately heard the sad stories on the radio about animals being left at your shelter for whatever reason, and if they are not taken, will be put down. I thought I’d send you a happy story.

I’ve attached photos of Kane when we first got him and a more recent shot of him.

He’s such a happy, friendly dog and he loves his exercise (which is doing me good as well) and we have lots of fun with him.

Thanks for the opportunity to adopt a pup.

Lucy

21 January 2008

To the hard working people at Yagoona RSPCA,

Just writing to let you know Lucy (formerly Jill) is doing marvellously with us since we adopted her in January last year.

When we got her, she was a skinny little thing, all scared and frightened by the experiences she might have had before she was picked up.

I've included photos of her now, and she is doing SO much better! She's happy and healthy, and makes me so proud! She used to be very very shy and would cower at nearly everything, but now, she is confident and always waiting for you with her happy waggy tail and lots of kisses! Boy, does she love to kiss!

She used to be afraid of our older female dog but now they aren't the best of friends but they still get along! She'll always wait for you at the door and is the sweetest thing, she absolutely LOVES attention! If you stop petting her for a while, she'll find some way of bringing your attention back to her!

As I mentioned before, she loves to lick everything! Nothing is safe from her tongue, but our family loves it =)

Thank you so much for bringing Lucy into our life!

Regards,

Lucy's loving family

Bazza

21 January 2008

Hello to everyone at Yagoona RSPCA,

You probably all knew me as BAZZA (034 0804) as I was adopted from Yagoona on the 7/1/08 by the Phillips family.

I have a new name now, they have called me "SETH" after SETH ENSLOW the motor bike guy, which is pretty cool.

My first day I was so excited that we played for hours!! Its a shame that they toys they brought me (socer balls & squeeks) didn't last that long (about 30 secs!!!!). Well they did find me a toy that I cant distroy, its a couple of old motorbike tyres & a basketball that I just can't seem to break!! There is an old bath tub that is under the pergola that the kids use to cool down in on hot days, but it looked so good, so I jumped in as well, so thats when I also got a bath.

I have attached a few photos for you all, I am have a great time with they new family and 1 of them is a vet nurse so she is making sure things are done right. I spent a lot of time at Yagoona & got to know a lot of the dog handlers & I think they got to know me pretty well too. So I wanted to say thankyou to you all for looking after me. And to all the other boarders I hope you have the same luck as I did for a new home.

Thank you all once again,

Seth

Kind regards

Sahara

04 January 2008

I just thought I’d drop you a short note to tell everyone what I’ve been up to since I left Yagoona. I have asked my chief human, Trish, to write this letter as, due to the fact that I don’t have opposable thumbs, I can’t pick up a pen and she won’t let me tap on the laptop! Something about fur gumming the keys up, or something like that! I’ve also included a few photos, including one showing the day I left Yagoona and another showing me and my friends on Canberra’s Million Paws Walk. We had a great time!

I have to tell you that I am doing quite nicely overall - although the staff do need the occasional bit of discipline in order to keep the standards up. I sometimes have to bark quite loudly at night until they come and fluff my pillows for me. Nice staff, but a bit slack on the bed turn-down service at times! I know they shouldn’t leave chocolate on my pillow, but a few liver treats wouldn’t go astray. My Labrador half brother (Dougie) doesn’t have the same standards as me, and my other greyhound sister (Sally) is a GAP girl from Victoria and so doesn’t have the same expectations as me. I have been trying to educate her …..but……what can I say!

I live in a very nice house that sits on 400 square metres of land and is fully insulated - hmm, the staff live in this other big house that has more gardens around it but they don’t like me playing in their yard unsupervised because I might fall off the retaining walls. As if! I’ve got fantastic balance! We all have our own trampoline beds (indoor and outdoor varieties) as well as comfy big soft ‘mattresses that sit on top of them. We have some shade sails attached to trees in our yard so that we can lounge around all day (that’s when we’re not in our house!).

Trish loves clothes (thankfully) and so Sally and I are always well dressed and have a new wardrobe each season. I don’t get to go inside the big house that often now - seems like it wasn’t appreciated when I grabbed a small, white, furry thing that seems to live in the house with them. I didn’t realise the white thing was special - I thought it was a snack. Oh dear, now Sally and Doug (the Labrador) are angry with me as they don’t get to go in and watch TV anymore (well at least without me having to wear the muzzle!). Oh, the white thing is OK and now sits and sneers at me through the window!! Sally told me that it’s called a cat and is actually very friendly - hmm, don’t believe her.

My staff here are generally pretty good, although I sometimes have to remind them to do things. Would you believe, the other night, Dave would not come when I called and I actually had to raise my voice in order to attract his attention and fix up the beds that someone else has messed up. Gee, you would have thought I’d done something really bad the way I was spoken to - hmm, just because it was 2am! Really some people just have no sense of their position. I do have a lot of fun with Doug and Sally. Sally and I love playing this game with Doug where we each grab a corner leg and flip him on his belly and bite him!! He thinks it’s pretty neat too as he keeps running back for more. However, sometimes Sally and I get into trouble from Dave because we kick Doug out of the house and won’t let him back in - but, really you can only take so many Labrador farts. One thing I can’t work out is why Sally gets snappy with me when I ‘test’ Doug’s patience. Sally starts to bark at me because she says that Doug might be an idiot, but he’s her idiot! How possessive it that!

Dave just came out and gave me a big cuddle because it’s my birthday today. Hope he doesn’t tell anyone how old I am (9!) – a girl doesn’t like to be reminded that she’s getting on, you know! He reckons I still act like a big puppy – I guess I have to seeing as I didn’t get a chance to enjoy my puppyhood before RSPCA rescued me.

Oh well, I had better sign off - it’s getting late and I know Trish and Dave have lots of other things to do. I would, however, like to wish you all a happy New Year, and I really do hope that all the furry friends at the RSPCA find a family who love and cherish me as much as mine do (even if I do try to eat the white thing, annoy the brown thing, teach the black thing how to be a real greyhound and wake the staff up in the middle of the night when they’ve committed an indiscretion!).

Best wishes, Sahara

Lucky & Spence - The Greyhound Spell!

03 January 2008

Hi

I thought I would contribute our story of how we came to be under the Greyhound spell!

We went to our local shelter at Somersby to buy a kitten of all things for my 12 year old daughter. On seeing the little bundle she wished for the animal attendant told her she had only just been adopted 5mins ago. Disappointed I told her things happen for a reason, so to cheer her up I suggested we go have a look at the dogs. I knew my husband wasn't keen on a dog and I agreed with him, in the sense that they can bark, be dirty, jump, hypo etc, until I saw the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen in my life! It was a large male brindle Greyhound and we decided to take him out for a walk. He was just the most magnificent creature I had ever seen.

When it came time to put him back, the tears came flooding down my cheeks, I could not part with those eyes!! That was back in July 07 and we have since again adopted another male brindle just before Christmas.

I want people to know about this wonderful breed, they are very easy to get in a routine, are very affectionate, calm yet playful and after a walk a day they like nothing better than to sleep and sleep and sleep. I have since heard them referred to as 60km/hr couch potatoes!!

Lucky and Spence are the two most adorable hounds, they give so much love and devotion and we are completely under their spell and feel so lucky to have them come into our family.

I have attached a pic of Lucky and Spence with their mate Silver.

Danny Boy and Peggy Sue

16 December 2007

Danny Boy and Peggy Sue joined our family about a year ago. Late last year we lost our 14 year old dog, Hattie, one of two dogs my wife and I had taken from the RSPCA in 1993. With two young boys who had never known a house without a dog, we were all at a bit of a loss but decided we would tough it out through Christmas before we thought about a new dog.

But somehow last December I found myself on the RSPCA website and there were Danny Boy and Peggy Sue. They became friends after being surrendered to the NSW Central Coast RSPCA earlier in the year and were then transferred to Sydney. Danny Boy is blind and depended on Peggy Sue to compensate. They had spent the best part of a year at the RSPCA waiting for a home. They had to be special dogs. We had to meet them.

Twelve months later - they are both sleeping under my desk as I write this - they have shown how special they are. Danny and Peggy settled in as soon as we brought them home. We were a little apprehensive about taking on a blind dog, but that didn't last long. Danny took very little time to find his way around and now shows that his vision is no barrier to a young dog. As cross cattle dogs Danny and Peggy have heaps of energy, which has taken its toll on the garden. But then they have such winning personalities, how can we complain? And walking them has been good for all of us. Walks are a real pleasure. They are great on the lead and love the opportunity to run free. Danny fares really well off the lead, following Peggy or responding to our calls.

Peggy is very social and has a number of dog-mates in the local parks. Danny took a while to accept this as he was pretty possessive of Peggy, but now loves meeting the locals. We take regular holidays at the beach, which the dogs just love. The thrill Danny gets once his paws hit sand is a delight. He loves water and is a big swimmer, though we try and discourage him from plunging into the surf.

Danny Boy and Peggy Sue have brought so much to our family. Love, fun and fitness. It took almost a year at the RSPCA for them to find a home. How lucky we are that it was ours!
