| At
the RSPCA we have many "senior" animals (from 5 years onwards) ready
for adoption - all looking for loving homes. It is unfortunate that these older
animals are often overlooked for the younger homeless animals. There
are a number of advantages of having an older dog or cat: -
What you see is what you get!
-
Older animal personalities are generally stabilised.
-
You are less likely to experience the chewing or curtain
climbing stage that young ones are prone to do in their quest for great adventure.
-
You can be sure of the animal’s full size and appearance
as an adult.
- Older pets
are generally calmer and more settled into life. This makes them more appreciative
of your love and attention.
"Old dogs,
like old shoes, are comfortable. They might be a bit out of shape and a little
worn around the edges, but they fit well." - Bonnie Wilcox, 'Old Dogs,
Old Friends' |
Can you teach an old dog new tricks?
While it may take an older dog a little bit longer to adjust to new situations,
they can – they will – they do! Seniors
for Seniors Lifestyle requirements of an older person often mix well
with the lifestyle of an older dog. It's a win/win situation, resulting in quality
retirement companionship for both. If you have visited
our shelter, or plan to in the future, you will come to know some of our more
mature guests. So, the next time you’re considering adopting a pet, please
consider the plight of an older dog or cat. While cute is nice, older is wiser!
Having an older pet could be the best decision you’ve ever made.
We believe that every animal deserves a chance.
