The RSPCA NSW operates 8 animal Shelters and 25 Branches. The largest shelter is located at Yagoona, in Sydney's south-western suburbs.

Each of these Shelters has one or more of the following functions:

•	To accept surrendered, unwanted animals for rehousing, if at all possible, or humane euthanasia as a last resort.
•	To accept stray animals, holding these for the period required by law before they are reclaimed, rehoused or humanely euthanased as a last resort.
•	To offer for sale at nominal cost, vaccinated, wormed, heartworm-tested and desexed animals with permanent microchip identification.
•	To hold, treat and rehabilitate animals who are the subject of investigations by our Inspectors.
•	To maintain legacy animals, whose owners have bequeathed a sum of money to the Society for their pets' care for the term of their natural lives.
•	To accept injured wildlife on a short-term basis for rehabilitation or referral to specialist agencies, such as Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Service - SMWS, Wildlife Information and Rescue Services - WIRES (both in the Sydney area), the Native Animal Trust Fund (in the Hunter area) and Rescue and Rehabilitation of Australian and Native Animals - RRANA (in the Broken Hill area).
